Cranes, Installation Personnel & Ground Transport for Pre-Assembly of 54 Offshore Wind Turbine Towers
Global Wind Projects successfully completed its first offshore wind project for Siemens Gamesa (a Tier 1 contractor for NnG offshore wind farm). We provided cranes, installation personnel, and ground transport (in partnership with Forth Ports) for the pre-assembly of 54 offshore wind turbine towers. The towers - jointly developed by EDF Renewables and ESB - were assembled at the Port of Dundee, the designated marshalling and assembly facility for the 450MW wind farm, before being transported to the 105km² site off the Fife coast.
Over the course of the project, Global Wind Projects personnel worked a total of 180,707 hours, with 90 specialists deployed at the Port of Dundee, including 42 blue-collar workers, 10 white-collar staff, and four crane drivers operating on a 2/2 rotation with night shifts for installation. The pre-assembly process followed a 15-day contractual turnaround for completing a four-pack of towers. The heaviest turbine component handled was the base tower with a half platform, weighing 140.4t, utilising the LG1750, LR1300, and a LTR220 crane for nacelles.

"Completing our first standalone offshore wind contract with Siemens Gamesa is a significant milestone for Global Wind Projects, and we are incredibly proud of our workforce. Their dedication and skill have been instrumental in delivering exceptional work while upholding the highest standards of quality and expertise throughout the project. This achievement would not have been possible without the strong collaboration between GWP, Forth Ports, and Siemens Gamesa. The commitment, adaptability, and teamwork demonstrated throughout the project have been outstanding. It is a testament to the team culture fostered on-site, ensuring that even in the face of challenges, we maintained excellence in quality, safety, and efficiency. Our client’s feedback perfectly captures the spirit of this project and the shared commitment to its success.”
- Ryan Burke, General Manager at Global Wind Projects
"It’s been so impressive the teamwork, collaboration, and open transparent communication to allow the pre-assembly build to progress, despite all the challenges thrown your way – namely the stop/start nature of the project, ramp-ups and downs, technical challenges, and sequence changes throughout.
“The quality has been maintained to an exceptional standard. It has never felt like separate contractors on site; the One-Team culture and mutually supportive nature of how everyone has worked has been instrumental in achieving this success. By far the most crucial and important measure of your achievements, and the value we hold the most significant, is that this milestone has been achieved safely. Zero recordable injuries. You have sent everyone home unharmed."
- Ben Hughes, Construction Project Manager at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Limited
